Tampa Offers Visitors History, Beaches and Fun
Whether you’re looking for history, water sports, theme park adventure, or shopping, Tampa, Florida has as much variety as you could ask for. Not only is Tampa a wonderful city in itself, but its unique location gives access to numerous nearby vacation spots as well.
Beaches are plentiful in the Tampa area and some of the best in the country. Not only are there beaches in the Tampa Bay, but within minutes you an be in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Pier 60 Park, Honeymoon Island State Park, Madiera Beach, Sunset Beach, Upham Beach, Treasure Island and literally dozens of other waterfront wonderlands. Tampa is also only 2 hours from Orlando and makes a great stopover for folks on their way to or from Mickey Mouse Town.
Tampa is full of history and has much to share with visitors to the area. Ybor City (pronounced Ee-bore), in Tampa’s Latin Quarter, is one of the most visited parts of Tampa. Here you can stroll along the cobblestone streets, dine in some of the best Tampa Restaurants, and visit the old Cuban cigar factory. Here you can watch as tobacco artisans still roll cigars in the museum by hand. The old factory is now filled with an assortment of shops and eating places, where Cuban food is the specialty. When the lights go down, the streets come alive and the crowds are drawn to some of the best nightclubs in Tampa.
A true delight for movie lovers is the lavish Tampa Theater. This famous landmark is an extravagantly ornate movie theater, built in 1926, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The theater offers tours and demonstrations of its own Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ, which is often played for its guests before film showings.
The Channelside District is a great place for those who seek the best Tampa nightlife and entertainment. You can find a vast assortment of dining alternatives, in addition to clubbing and movie theaters, including a 3-D IMAX theater. Further to the south you’ll find the Pier, where you can stroll along the overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The Pier’s features its own non-profit Aquarium, with galleries and boating docks. From here, you can look out over the Gulf of Mexico from a huge observation deck, or take a short or extended dinner cruise.
The list of museum attraction in Tampa is long and it could take days just to see the few listed here. Among the best would be The Florida Aquarium, the Lowry Park Zoo, the Florida International Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. If you’re in the mood for more thrilling excitement, check out Busch Gardens theme park owned by Anheuser-Busch. Here you can brave various amusement park rides, including the Montu; the tallest and longest inverted roller coaster in the southeast.
